How Chiropractic Care Positively Impacts Mental Health

Improve your Mental Health with Chiropractic Care!

Many people separate the mind and the body, but this separation is far from accurate. The two work in conjunction and the health of one affects the health of the other. All you need to do to realize this is think about how you feel emotionally when you’ve hurt your back or have a headache.

The reverse is also true. When your mental health is less than optimal, it can eventually take a toll on your body. Many people experience nagging physical symptoms and sometimes severe physical disabilities due to untreated mental health issues.

Treating physical health conditions can go a long way in restoring mental health. Dealing with mental health issues prevents physical issues from arising. Chiropractic care is an effective treatment for dealing with both sides of this coin, improving physical and mental health.

How Mental Health Affects the Body

Your mental health affects your body. Caring for your mental health can help you prevent various health conditions. There are even studies that show that positive mental health reduces your risk of cardiovascular health problems.

Mental health challenges can also cause poor physical health to develop. Struggling with a mental health issue can:

  • Disrupt sleep

  • Cause elevated levels of cortisol, which disrupts your immune system, digestion, reproductive health, and cardiovascular system

  • Cause persistent fatigue

  • Contribute to obesity or excessive weight loss

  • Makes you less likely to engage in physical activity

  • Reduce your motivation to make healthy dietary and other health choices

The Role of Chiropractic Care in Mental Health

Chiropractic care plays a vital role in restoring and supporting good mental health. Chiropractors recognize the connection between the mind and body. Chiropractic care can:

Improve overall mood and well-being

  • Reduce stress

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Reduce anxiety

  • Increase energy

  • Alleviate symptoms of depression

  • Promote relaxation

  • Boost mood

Benefits of Including Chiropractic Care in Your Mental Health Regimine

Chiropractic care is natural and non-invasive. It takes a whole-body approach, which treats the mind and the body. It also takes into account the health of the former on the latter’s and vice versa.

Chiropractic adjustments are used to treat a variety of conditions. They are used with massage, stretching, nutrition and fitness counseling, and supplements to improve health.

The benefits of chiropractic care for treating mental health include:

Relieving Tension

Chiropractic patients enjoy relief from the tension caused by anxiety and depression. Common tension problems include stiffness, headaches, and lack of mobility. Improving spinal and musculoskeletal health is one of the best ways to relieve muscle tension, which leads to improved mental health.

Release of Feel-good Hormones

Spinal adjustments cause the release of feel-good hormones, including oxytocin. This helps improve overall health and well-being. These hormones improve your mood and make it easier to deal with stress, improve social bonding, and alleviate pain.

Balancing Mental and Physical Health

Balance is essential in all areas of life. Balancing your mind and body improves your quality of life, especially when dealing with mental health issues. Correcting spinal misalignments makes your body function better. You’ll feel more comfortable in your body, so you’ll be less tempted to “be in your head” too much or to focus too much on your discomfort. Chiropractors help patients find a balance between their physical being and their mental being.

Promoting Quality Sleep

Not getting enough quality sleep can be one of the most detrimental factors to good health. Whether your lack of sleep is caused by stress, anxiety, physical discomfort, or any other reason, chiropractic treatments can help you sleep better. Treatments improve sleep patterns, so whether you are struggling to sleep or sleeping too much, chiropractic care can help.

Improving Mental Clarity

Mental clarity is a problem for people with mental and physical health challenges. When you’re focused on misery, it’s difficult to think clearly. Sometimes, they struggle with the inability to focus and brain fog. These problems might be mental, physical, or both. Chiropractic treatments relieve imbalance and muscle tension. They promote relaxation and make it easier for you to think clearly.

Four Benefits to Seeing a Chiropractor for Knee Pain Treatment

Knee pain is a prevalent condition in the United States. The pain might sting when bending over or worsen when walking or jogging. Your first thought might be injury caused by deterioration or arthritis. The knee pain could also be from an overstretched tendon. The truth is, seeing a professional is the only way to know. Regardless of the cause, chronic knee pain can make life unbearable.

Benefits of seeing a chiropractor

Seeing a chiropractor for knee pain treatment has many benefits, including:

An effective solution to pain

Patients who are experiencing pain often turn to medications for relief. Instead of using pain meds, it might be more beneficial to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor. Studies have shown that chiropractic treatment can be more effective for pain management than medications. It can relieve and treat the conditions that might be contributing to knee pain.

Treat the origin of the pain

Most pain meds only resolve the symptoms and do not treat the cause of the condition. Chiropractic care, on the contrary, can be effective for resolving the origin of the pain. This is not to say chiropractic treatment is a universal solution to all health issues. However, chiropractors try to address the cause of pain found in the body’s nervous system.

The point is that the central nervous system controls almost every body function, including reflexive reactions and breathing down to the slightest movements. The nerves are linked to the spine and found in all parts of the body, which means spine health is vital for general wellness.

Low-risk treatment

Chiropractic care has its side effects, but they are minimal and usually include soreness around the point of adjustment, fatigue, or headaches after the procedure. These side effects are temporary and insignificant compared to the effect of realigning the spine and nervous system for a healthier lifestyle. Patients can be assured of the safety of chiropractic care. Compared to the side effects that often accompany other knee pain treatments like medications, chiropractic care is non-invasive with low risks.

Prevent joint dysfunction

The knee joints play a major role in mobility. If there are troubles with the knee, you may struggle to walk, stand, or even get out of bed. Seeing a chiropractor for knee pain treatment can help reduce dysfunction in the joints. The joint pain often traces back to the spine, which is where chiropractors often perform their treatments.

Get individualized treatment from the chiropractor

When you visit the chiropractor for knee pain treatment, they will develop a unique plan that fits your specific condition. Chiropractic care involves the application of different methods and tools for different conditions. Therefore, if you are experiencing joint pain or mobility has become more challenging, it is best to visit the chiropractor as soon as possible.

The doctor will know how to deal with the problem after a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of the pain. They will work to restore strength and stability to the knee, improve your balance, and help you return to normal life.

Chiropractic Adjustments Influence the Vagus Nerve.

With each passing year, more and more evidence is mounting supporting the benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments.

Every year, scientists are publishing scientific chiropractic-based studies aimed at gaining a little more understanding as to how chiropractic influences your health and wellness.

While there’s a lot of work yet to do, the evidence is pointing to a world of possibilities when it comes to neuroplasticity (changes in nerve and brain tissue) and human performance.

Still, there are new frontiers yet to be explored.

One of these is the area of vagal nerve stimulation.

Recent research indicates that decreased neuro-inflammation is associated with higher vagus nerve activity. [1]

So what is the vagus nerve and how exactly does a chiropractic adjustment stimulate the vagus nerve?

The Vagus Nerve is a Key to Well Being

Take a deep breath.

Hug a friend.

Reach for the ceiling and stretch your limbs.

Each of these simple acts bestows a sense of calm and comfort.

And each works its soothing magic in part by activating a complicated system of nerves that connects the brain to the heart, the gut, the immune system, and many of the organs.

That system is known collectively as the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is one of the twelve cranial nerves, which spread out from brain and into the body like an intricate network of roots.

These nerve networks act as lines of communication between the brain and the body’s many systems and organs.

Some of the cranial nerves interpret sensory information collected by the skin, eyes, or tongue.

Others control muscles or communicate with glands.

The vagus nerve, also called the “10th cranial nerve,” is the longest, largest, and most complex of the cranial nerves, and in some ways it’s also the least understood.

Experts have linked its activity to symptom changes in people with migraine headaches, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, epilepsy, arthritis, and many other common ailments.

The more scientists learn about the vagus nerve, the more it seems like a better understanding of its function could unlock new doors to treating all manner of human suffering.

We know that depressed people have low vagus nerve activity.

A separate branch of the vagus nerve runs down to the gastrointestinal tract and decreased activity is associated with slowed gastric function, which interferes with proper digestion.

Still other branches of the vagus nerve are connected to the heart, the lungs, and the immune system.

The vagus nerve’s activation or deactivation is tied to the ebb or flow of hormones such as cortisol and the digestive hormone ghrelin, the amount of inflammation the immune system produces, and many other internal processes that shape human health and experience.

There’s a massive bioelectrical and biochemical series of events that the vagus nerve is responsible for, and all that is almost impossible to map; yet we know that chiropractic adjustments can stimulate it.

Why is that important?

Pick almost any common medical condition that’s made worse by stress or inflammation — everything from arthritis to inflammatory bowel disease — and there’s research showing that vagus nerve stimulation can help treat it or relieve its symptoms.

Chiropractic Adjustments Influence the Vagus Nerve

The vagus nerve is especially important to Chiropractors because of the link between essential nerves and the spine and upper neck.

Spinal health plays a significant role in directing the health of the vagus nerve.

If the spine becomes altered in its positioning or ability to move freely, the information to and from the spinal nerves become interrupted.

Chiropractors play close attention to the alignment and movement of the spine to assure better vagus nerve activity.

New research from 2018 proved that chiropractic adjustments boost the function of the vagus nerve by impacting heart rate variability, which is what the vagus nerve controls.

Another study showed that long term chiropractic care (52 weeks) resulted in sustained improvements of heart rate variability.

An improvement in the vagus nerve activity plays a major role in regulating autonomic nervous system function, lowering chronic disease risk, and decreasing mortality rates.

Better health and function within the nervous system represents only a portion of the benefits experienced through regular Chiropractic care.

All people deserve the proven health care option delivered conveniently by a local Chiropractor.

Now you know!

How Chiropractic care helps trigger finger.

Stenosing tenosynovitis, also known as “trigger finger,” is a repetitive strain injury that is one of the most common injuries in the workplace. It is marked by one finger or thumb that is stuck in a bent position and pops or snaps when straightened. It is caused by an inflamed or irritated flexor tendon.

As it slides through the sheath tunnel, the back and forth motion causes the irritation which can lead to thickening of the tendon and even the formation of nodules. This can impede it movement through the sheath which can also thicken so that the opening that the tendon slides through becomes smaller.

What are the symptoms of trigger finger?

A person with trigger finger may experience several symptoms in one or more fingers or thumb including:

  • Pain when straightening or bending the finger

  • Swelling

  • A lump in the palm that is tender

  • The finger or thumb joints have a popping or catching sensation

  • Stiffness

  • The impaired tendon may suddenly break free causing the finger to snap straight or feel like it is dislocating

Some symptoms, like the stiffness, popping, and catching, may be more pronounced after periods of inactivity. The patient may find that upon waking in the morning they have difficulty, but as they move their fingers they loosen and the symptoms aren’t as bad. In severe cases the patient is unable to straighten their finger, even with help.

What causes trigger finger?

Many times the cause of trigger finger is not known. They may notice a gradual decline or they may simply wake up one day and experience symptoms. There are certain health conditions and circumstances that put some patients at a greater risk of developing trigger finger:

  • Men tend to get trigger finger more than women do

  • The most common age group for trigger finger is between 40 and 60 years old

  • It is more prevalent in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and other medical conditions

  • Repetitive hand motions such as typing, gripping power tools, or playing video games

  • Activities that put a strain on the hands.

Chiropractic for trigger finger

There are two chiropractic treatments that are used for trigger finger: Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston technique. Studies have found these chiropractic techniques to be very effective in treating trigger finger. It can help you avoid surgery.

Instrument based soft tissue therapy may also be used to help reduce tension in the muscles around the area. Chiropractors typically use a whole-body approach to help the patient achieve relief and healing. They recognize that most conditions are not limited to only what appears to be the affected area so they will employ techniques that treat the associated areas of the body as well. This provides the patient with more reliable relief without the use of invasive procedures. Chiropractic is an effective, natural way to treat trigger finger.

Chiropractic care for hand and wrist pain

If you are dealing with an unexpected wrist injury or have chronic pain in your arms and hands due to repetitive activities or injury, you should consider seeing a chiropractor. In most cases, people end up relying on painkillers for immediate relief, and that’s surely not a recommended solution. Or they opt for hand or wrist surgery which, studies have shown, may not be in your best interest in the long run. Contrary to the common belief, the benefits of chiropractic care extend beyond treatment of neck and back pain. Here are the ways in which chiropractic care can help with hand and wrist pain.

  1. Help with bone realignment. For example, there are 8 bones in your wrist. Pain in the arm can be a result of stiffness in the neck, upper back or the wrist. A hand and wrist chiropractor can help figure out where the pain is coming from and decrease hand pain considerably. However, it largely depends on the diagnosis. If the pain is associated with pinched nerves in the spine, your chiropractor can help in realigning the same.

  2. Reduce pain. Chiropractic care is extremely beneficial for reducing dysfunction and inflammation associated with hand pain. Patients, who suffer from chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel and arthritis, often rely on chiropractic care to get immediate relief as well as corrective care. Depending on the condition, chiropractors can also use muscle stimulation, ultrasound and other therapies to relieve the pressure in hands and wrists.

  3. Improve range of motion. If you are into fitness or play games that cause stress on your arms and wrists or you spend lots of time typing in front of your computer, you should consider visiting a chiropractor consistently. They can help in minimizing the stiffness, which can significantly improve your range of motion, especially when you want to improve the flexibility of your muscles, tendons and ligaments.

  4. Get better with fitness. We all know that chiropractic care is great for professional athletes and weekend warriors. Even if you don’t have pain in your arms and hands, your chiropractor can teach you ways in which you can add more hand and wrist mobility so your gym workouts with dumbbells and barbells will be easier. They will also show a few exercises, which will help with specific conditions of the hand and wrist bones and muscles.

  5. Accelerate your healing process. Chiropractic care for hand and wrist injuries can help in speeding up the recovery process. You will see a considerable difference in your pain and range of motion, even when you are not taking any over-the-counter medications.

Understanding Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can be a challenging and discomforting condition that affects people from all walks of life. To effectively address and manage elbow pain, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the symptoms, types, and underlying causes. This knowledge can empower individuals to seek appropriate treatment and make informed decisions about their health. Elbow pain manifests in various ways, and understanding the symptoms associated with it can aid in early diagnosis and targeted treatment. Common symptoms include:

  1. Pain: The most obvious and prevalent symptom is pain, which can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing sensation.

    1. Stiffness: Many individuals with elbow pain experience stiffness, making it difficult to fully extend or flex the arm.

    2. Weakness: Weakened grip strength or difficulty lifting objects can indicate underlying elbow issues.

    3. Tenderness: The affected area may be tender to the touch.

    4. Swelling: Inflammation can lead to swelling around the elbow joint.

Types of Elbow Pain:

  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): This condition typically involves pain on the outer part of the elbow and is often associated with repetitive motions of the forearm, such as those seen in tennis and other sports.

    1. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Golfer’s elbow, conversely, affects the inner part of the elbow and is often associated with activities that involve gripping and twisting motions, such as golf or manual labor.

    2. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa sac, a cushioning structure in the elbow joint, can cause significant discomfort.

    3. Arthritis: Various forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, can affect the elbow joint, leading to pain and reduced mobility.

    4. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the elbow can result from overuse or injury.

Causes of Elbow Pain

Understanding the underlying causes of elbow pain is crucial in determining the most appropriate treatment approach. Some common causes include:

  • Overuse and Repetitive Strain: Engaging in repetitive activities or sports that stress the elbow joint can lead to overuse injuries, such as tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.

    1. Direct Injury: Trauma, such as a fall or impact, can damage the structures in the elbow joint and cause pain.

    2. Age-Related Changes: As individuals age, wear and tear on the joint can lead to conditions like osteoarthritis.

    3. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can cause chronic inflammation in the elbow joint.

    4. Nerve Compression: Nerves in the neck or upper back can become compressed and refer pain to the elbow.

    5. Lifestyle Factors: Poor ergonomics at workstations or improper lifting techniques can contribute to elbow pain.

By recognizing the symptoms and types of elbow pain and understanding its root causes, individuals can take proactive steps to seek appropriate care and make lifestyle adjustments to alleviate discomfort and prevent future issues.

Techniques and Treatments for Elbow Pain

As chiropractors we employ a range of techniques and treatments to alleviate elbow pain and promote healing. These approaches are non-invasive and focus on restoring proper joint function and reducing discomfort. Here’s an overview of some key chiropractic methods for managing elbow pain:

  1. Chiropractic Adjustments for Elbow Pain

    • Joint Manipulation: Chiropractors use precise manual adjustments to correct misalignments (subluxations) in the elbow joint. These adjustments aim to restore proper alignment, reduce nerve irritation, and enhance joint function.

      1. Soft Tissue Mobilization: Chiropractors may employ techniques to manipulate and mobilize the soft tissues surrounding the elbow, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This helps alleviate tension and improve blood flow to the affected area.

      2. Active Release Technique (ART): ART is a specialized soft tissue technique used to treat conditions like tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. It involves applying deep pressure and specific movements to break up scar tissue and adhesions.

  2. Soft Tissue Therapy for Elbow Pain

    • Myofascial Release: Chiropractors use myofascial release techniques to target the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles and tendons. This approach can help reduce muscle tension and improve flexibility.

      1. Massage Therapy: Massage therapy can be an integral part of chiropractic care for elbow pain. It enhances circulation, reduces muscle stiffness, and promotes relaxation, which can aid in pain relief.

  3. Rehabilitation Exercises and Stretches

    • Strengthening Exercises: Chiropractors often prescribe specific exercises to strengthen the muscles around the elbow joint. These exercises help improve stability and prevent further injury.

      1. Range of Motion Exercises: Gentle stretching and range of motion exercises can help enhance flexibility and restore normal movement in the elbow.

      2. Ergonomic and Lifestyle Recommendations: Chiropractors provide guidance on proper ergonomics and lifestyle modifications to prevent elbow pain recurrence. This may include advice on posture, workplace setup, and avoiding activities that exacerbate the condition.

      3. Nutritional Guidance: In some cases, chiropractors may offer nutritional advice to support overall joint health and reduce inflammation.

Chiropractic care takes a holistic approach to treating elbow pain, addressing not only the symptoms but also the underlying causes. By combining various techniques and therapies, chiropractors tailor their treatments to the specific needs of each patient.

Preventing Elbow Pain

Prevention is often the best medicine when it comes to elbow pain. Whether you’ve experienced elbow discomfort in the past or want to avoid it altogether, implementing preventive measures and making lifestyle adjustments can significantly reduce your risk. Here are some effective strategies to keep elbow pain at bay. Ensure your workspace, whether at the office or home, is ergonomically designed to minimize strain on your elbows. Adjust chair height, monitor position, and keyboard placement to promote a neutral wrist and elbow position. If your work involves repetitive tasks or computer use, take regular breaks to stretch your arms, wrists, and fingers. This can help prevent overuse injuries. Whether you’re engaging in sports, exercise, or heavy lifting, warm up your muscles and joints with gentle stretching and mobility exercises to prepare them for more strenuous activity. When lifting objects, bend your knees and hips instead of your back, and use your leg muscles to lift. Avoid straining your arms and elbows. Excess body weight can put additional strain on your joints, including the elbows. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can reduce this burden.

Lifestyle Changes to Reduce the Risk of Recurring Elbow Pain

  1. Regular Exercise: Engage in regular strength and flexibility exercises to maintain overall joint health. Focus on exercises that target the muscles around the elbow joint.

    1. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports joint health. Drink plenty of water to keep your joints lubricated.

    2. Balanced Nutrition: A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inflammation in the joints.

    3. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can lead to muscle tension and contribute to joint pain. Practice stress management techniques like meditation or yoga to relax your muscles and reduce tension.

    4. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to early warning signs of elbow discomfort or pain. If you experience any symptoms, avoid activities that aggravate the pain and seek professional advice promptly.

By incorporating these preventive measures into your daily routine and lifestyle, you can significantly reduce the risk of elbow pain and maintain the health and functionality of your elbow joints. However, if you do experience persistent or severe elbow pain, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional or a chiropractor for a thorough evaluation and appropriate guidance.

When to Seek Chiropractic Care for Elbow Pain

While chiropractic care can be a valuable and effective approach to managing elbow pain, it’s essential to know when it’s appropriate to seek the expertise of a chiropractor. Some key indicators that suggest it may be time to consider chiropractic care for your elbow pain is if you experience persistent or recurring elbow pain that doesn’t improve with rest, over-the-counter pain medication, or home remedies, it may be an appropriate time to consult a chiropractor. Chronic elbow pain can be indicative of underlying issues that chiropractic care can address. Also, when your elbow pain is accompanied by a restricted range of motion, such as difficulty fully extending or flexing your arm, it could be a sign of joint dysfunction or soft tissue restrictions. If your elbow pain interferes with your ability to perform everyday activities, such as lifting, gripping objects, or even typing, it’s advisable to seek chiropractic care to help identify the specific activities or movements that exacerbate your pain and provide targeted treatments. If you’re feeling numbness, tingling, or radiating sensations in the arm or hand these can be associated with nerve compression or irritation in the neck or upper back, which may contribute to elbow pain. If you’ve recently experienced a traumatic event or injury to your elbow, such as a fall or impact, it’s wise to consult a chiropractor even if the pain seems minor at first. Injuries can lead to hidden structural issues that may worsen over time if left untreated. Also If you’ve tried other conservative treatments for your elbow pain, such as physical therapy, rest, or medication, without significant improvement, chiropractic care can offer an alternative approach that addresses the underlying musculoskeletal causes.

Preventive Care and Maintenance

Chiropractic care isn’t only for treating existing conditions; it can also be beneficial for preventive care and maintenance. Athletes and individuals with physically demanding occupations often seek chiropractic care to optimize joint function and reduce the risk of future injuries, including elbow pain. It’s important to note that chiropractors are healthcare professionals trained to assess and diagnose musculoskeletal conditions comprehensively. If you’re unsure whether chiropractic care is suitable for your specific elbow pain, consider scheduling an initial consultation with a chiropractor. During this consultation, we can evaluate your condition, discuss your medical history, and determine if chiropractic care is the right course of action for you. Remember that early intervention and a proactive approach to managing elbow pain can lead to faster recovery and improved long-term joint health.

Top Myths 16 about Chiropractic Care

1) Chiropractors aren’t trusted by other healthcare professionals.

This might have been true about 80 years ago, but today, with tons of scientific evidence showing the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment, even The American College of Physicians updated their guidelines, stating that doctors should send patients to chiropractors before resorting to back or neck surgery or addicting pharmaceutical drugs.

2) Chiropractors aren’t REAL doctors.

This is perhaps the biggest myth that won’t die. No one would dream of telling a dentist that he wasn’t a real dentist because he didn’t perform surgery or a travel nurse that she wasn’t a real nurse because she wasn’t an LPN. Chiropractors are real doctors who are specialists in the neuromusculoskeletal aspect of the body. Is your primary care doctor less of a doctor because he’s not a brain surgeon?  The ACA notes that “Chiropractors are educated in nationally accredited, four-year doctoral graduate school programs through a curriculum that includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical internship, with the average DC program equivalent in classroom hours to allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) medical schools.”

3) Chiropractic adjustments are dangerous.

The facts are that, even the so-called “dangerous” neck adjustments are statistically safer than driving your car or even taking ibuprofen!  Chiropractic adjustments are far less invasive and safer than many other types of medicine or medical procedures.

4) Chiropractors are only good for treating back pain.

This is also an old rumor that just won’t die. Of course, chiropractors tend to work more with those who have back pain, but that is hardly the only disorder they treat. Chiropractic therapy can help with a variety of problems, from pregnancy to whiplash, fibromyalgia to tendonitis.

5) Children should not have adjustments.

While some people believe this, the truth is that children have been successfully treated by chiropractors since at least 1910. One look at online testimonials from parents will tell you that chiropractic is effective for children of all ages.

6) Chiropractors can’t help with sciatica.

This is another old myth that needs to hit the road. Sciatica pain is caused by a compression of the sciatic nerve. The reasons as to why the sciatic nerve is feeling this compression are multiple. What works for one person’s sciatica does not work for another person. While some patients feel almost immediate relief after one chiropractic treatment, other people take several weeks and treatments. It will all depend on the root cause. However, chiropractic care is extremely effective in this area. You can discover more about what chiropractic can do for sciatica, as well as it’s effectiveness, in this article.

7) Adjustments are painful.

This is absolute nonsense. Anyone who has ever had an adjustment knows how good they feel! There is an instant sense of relief and a release of pressure!  Occasionally, people feel a bit sore the next day, but it certainly isn’t painful. You can read more about what adjustments actually feel like in this article.

8) Chiropractors just crack backs, something you can do yourself.

This is another myth. Chiropractors don’t actually “crack” anything. That description comes from the noise joints make when a build up of gas escapes from them. Similar to the pop sound you hear when opening a bottle of soda. While it’s true that you can probably “crack” your own back, it’s certainly not the same as finding the proper subluxation and having the chiropractor put the joint back into proper alignment. If you notice, most people who crack their backs or necks continually need to do so– often several times each day- to find relief. This isn’t even close to what a chiropractor does and shouldn’t even be a comparison!

9) Once you start with a chiropractor, you have to continue going for years or the rest of your life.

This myth is often stated in one of two ways; either it’s years or the rest of your life. The reality is that, for some conditions, it’s true that chiropractic will be a long-term engagement if there is no cure and the patient will need long term care and/or pain management. For nearly everyone else, once your body has healed, you won’t need to return to the chiropractor unless you wish to. Some patients love the way regular chiropractic adjustments and massages make them feel so they go on a regular basis. There is no “requirement” or addictive substance involved in chiropractic treatment, so, no, you won’t have to go “for the rest of your life.”

10) Chiropractic is expensive.

Depending on where you live, prices will vary considerably, but generally speaking, chiropractic is much more affordable than conventional care. This type of therapy is often covered by insurance and when you consider that many people discover that they can avoid surgery and lengthy amounts of time off from work, it’s easy to see why chiropractic is the affordable choice. If you don’t have insurance that covers chiropractic, you will want to read this article.

11) There is no science to back up chiropractic claims.

This myth might have been true 100 years ago, but no longer. There are hundreds of scientific studies showing that chiropractic is effective. Check out our list of reasons to see a chiropractor in the article below. Each one has a listing with scientific evidence of its effectiveness.

12) Chiropractors can’t help strains or sprains. Those just take time.

This is another old wives’ tale that isn’t true. While the words strains and sprains are often used interchangeably, they aren’t exactly the same thing, however, regardless of which one you have, chiropractic can not only help to relieve the pain, but it can cut way back on the amount of time it takes the affected area to heal. How quickly can chiropractic help that strain or sprain to heal? That will depend on many factors. An 80-year old diabetic will take much longer to heal than a 25-year old athlete. You can read more about sprains, strains, and chiropractic here.

13) Your primary care physician or an M.D. must refer you to a chiropractor.

This is an outdated statement. While this used to be true, unless it is a requirement from your insurance company, federal law says you can see a chiropractor first and you don’t need a referral.

14) Chiropractors will do X-rays whether you need one or not.

The truth is that any doctor, whether they are a chiropractor or not, who does unnecessary x-rays is not a true professional. Your chiropractor will only order imaging tests if the need is there.

15) Chiropractors claim that adjustments can cure anything.

This is 100 percent false. If you find a chiropractor who claims they can cure anything and everything, run for the hills! Chiropractic can help many people, but it is not a magic cure-all!

16) Chiropractors won’t do anything that will really help you; otherwise, they won’t make any money.

This false statement is often applied to other health care professionals and the pharmaceutical companies as well. Conspiracy theorists love to tout this statement, but they never have any facts to back it up. Of course, chiropractors need to charge for their services, no one wants to work for free, but like all true health care professionals, their main satisfaction and reason for getting into medicine to begin with stems from a genuine desire to help people. It’s important to remember that persons who suffer from incurable health problems are only able to have their health and pain levels managed. This doesn’t mean that doctors, prescription drug companies, and chiropractors are only in it “for the money.”

The connection between Chiropractic care and better sleep.

Sleep is an essential component of our lives, impacting our health, mood, and overall well-being. Many people struggle with sleep disorders, with factors such as pain, discomfort, and stress often being the culprits. One solution that has been gaining attention for its potential to improve sleep quality is chiropractic care. In this article, we’ll delve into the fascinating connection between chiropractic care and improved sleep.

The Role of Pain in Sleep Disruption

Pain is a significant factor that can lead to disrupted sleep patterns. Whether it’s spinal pain, migraines, or chronic discomfort, pain can make it challenging to find a comfortable sleeping position, leading to restless nights. The body’s natural response to pain is to tense up, which can further exacerbate discomfort and make relaxation nearly impossible. This is where chiropractic care comes into play.

Chiropractic Adjustments and Pain Relief

Chiropractors specialize in addressing issues related to the musculoskeletal system. Through hands-on therapies such as spinal manipulation, they aim to reduce pain and optimize physical function. By alleviating pain, chiropractic care can directly contribute to better sleep. For instance, a person suffering from chronic back pain may find relief after a series of chiropractic adjustments, leading to improved sleep quality.

Beyond pain relief, chiropractic care offers benefits that promote relaxation. Adjustments can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, leading to a feeling of relaxation and well-being.

Stress and the Nervous System

Stress is another factor that can negatively impact sleep. The body’s response to stress involves the nervous system, and any imbalances can lead to symptoms like insomnia. Chiropractic care focuses on improving the function of the central nervous system, which can help regulate the body’s stress response and promote relaxation.

Addressing Specific Sleep Disorders

While chiropractic care can improve sleep by addressing pain and promoting relaxation, it can also offer solutions for specific sleep disorders.

Insomnia and Chiropractic Care

Insomnia, characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, affects a significant portion of the population. While there are various causes of insomnia, spinal misalignments can be a contributing factor. By correcting these misalignments, chiropractic care can help balance the body’s internal systems, potentially leading to improved sleep.

Chiropractic Solutions for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing is interrupted during sleep. One of the causes of sleep apnea is the obstruction of the airway due to musculoskeletal issues. Chiropractic adjustments can address these underlying issues, leading to improved airflow and reduced symptoms of sleep apnea

Final Thoughts

The connection between chiropractic care and improved sleep is multifaceted. Whether it’s through pain relief, promoting relaxation, or addressing specific sleep disorders, chiropractic care offers a holistic approach to improving sleep quality. If you or someone you know struggles with sleep, considering chiropractic care might be a step in the right direction.

FAQ

1. How does chiropractic care alleviate pain that disrupts sleep? Chiropractic care focuses on addressing misalignments in the spine and other parts of the musculoskeletal system. By correcting these misalignments through adjustments, chiropractors can reduce pain and discomfort, making it easier for individuals to find a comfortable sleeping position and enjoy uninterrupted sleep.

2. Can chiropractic adjustments help with other sleep disorders besides insomnia and sleep apnea? While the most commonly discussed benefits of chiropractic care for sleep relate to insomnia and sleep apnea, some patients have reported improvements in other sleep-related issues, such as restless leg syndrome and nighttime muscle cramps, after receiving chiropractic treatments. However, it’s essential to consult with a chiropractor to discuss specific sleep disorders and potential treatments.

3. How many chiropractic sessions are typically needed to see improvements in sleep? The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual’s specific condition and needs. Some people might experience immediate relief and improved sleep after just one session, while others may need multiple sessions over weeks or months to achieve the desired results. It’s best to work closely with a chiropractor to develop a personalized treatment plan.

4. Are there any side effects of chiropractic adjustments that could affect sleep? While chiropractic care is generally considered safe, some individuals might experience minor side effects like temporary soreness or stiffness after an adjustment. However, these effects are typically short-lived and should not significantly impact sleep. In fact, many people report feeling more relaxed and sleeping better after their adjustments.

5. Can children benefit from chiropractic care for sleep issues? Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care, especially if they have musculoskeletal issues or pain that affects their sleep. Chiropractors trained in pediatric care use gentle techniques suitable for children’s developing bodies. Parents have reported improvements in their children’s sleep patterns after receiving chiropractic care.

6. Besides chiropractic adjustments, what other advice might a chiropractor offer for better sleep? Chiropractors often take a holistic approach to health and may offer advice on sleep hygiene, proper sleeping positions, the right type of mattress and pillow, and relaxation techniques to promote better sleep. They might also provide recommendations on exercises or stretches that can help alleviate pain or tension that disrupts sleep.

Chiropractic care for ringing in the ears

Do you have ringing in your ears? You may be wondering if there are other options besides surgery or medication. Learn more about the benefits of chiropractic care for ringing in the ears.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Ringing in Your Ears

Ringing in the ears is a common phenomenon that will occur at some point in your life. But if you are one of the over 20 million Americans who struggle with chronic tinnitus or the 2 million who experience extreme symptoms, you need to seek care. Chiropractic treatment is a solution that does not come to mind initially but has proven effective in helping patients deal with tinnitus.

What Is Tinnitus - Ringing in Your Ears?

Tinnitus is a constant noise in your ear that no one else can hear. The noise is usually ringing but can be buzzing, chirping, hissing, or whistling, and it varies in intensity. Tinnitus, or chronic ringing ears, is not a disease in itself but is a sign of an underlying disease. The condition is not life-threatening, but it can cause depression or anxiety.

Tinnitus Symptoms

Tinnitus symptoms are primarily auditory. You may hear constant or intermittent noises that no one else can hear. The pitch may be loud or low, and you may have it in one ear or both. In rare cases, you may have a sensation of fullness in your head or develop migraines. Pulsatile tinnitus is also a rare symptom where the ringing sound occurs in sync with your heartbeat. Do you have ringing in your ears? In rare cases, you may have a sensation of fullness in your head or develop migraines. Pulsatile tinnitus is also a rare symptom where the ringing sound occurs in sync with your heartbeat.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Prolonged exposure to loud sounds is the chief culprit behind tinnitus. However, tinnitus can occur due to damaged nerves, otosclerosis, neck or jaw problems, and injuries to the head or neck. Chiropractic care usually focuses on the causative, dealing with injuries to the musculoskeletal system, such as the neck, jaw, and other parts of the upper cervical region.

Tinnitus may be a symptom of ear blockage, cardiovascular disease, thyroid disease, Meniere’s disease, or ear infection. It is essential to treat the cause rather than the symptom.

Prevention of Tinnitus

You can take some steps to prevent developing chronic tinnitus. The following tips are essential for factory personnel, first responders, and other people in occupations with constant loud noises.

  • Take vitamins. Vitamin B12 is vital in preventing chronic tinnitus.

  • Wear ear protection when in loud environments.

  • Maintain a healthy state of your emotions. Take breaks to lower feelings of anxiety and depression.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Maintain good head posture.

  • Avoid loud sounds.

  • Use low volume when listening to music.

How Our Tinnitus Treatment Works

Seeing a chiropractor for tinnitus relief focuses on the vertebral misalignment that causes tinnitus. Chiropractic care for tinnitus involves spinal manipulation that creates a balance in the upper cervical spine, providing relief from ringing ears.

A 2014 case study of a 46-year-old woman with tinnitus showed that her hearing had completely returned to normal after eight months. Another study in 2012 showed a 52-year-old man who had Meniere’s disease but found relief after seeking chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care for tinnitus treatment involves thrusts and slow, gentle adjustments to realign your spine and relieve pressure to restore optimal function to your audio-sensory structures. How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Tinnitus

Misalignment of the upper cervical spine increases pressure on the craniofacial nerves, including the vestibulocochlear nerve. This affects auditory processing. The increased pressure on the brain's stem also causes improper relay of signals to the brain. The two complications combined cause unpleasant ringing in the inner ear, termed tinnitus. Chiropractic adjustments and upper cervical care can bring relief to tinnitus sufferers.

Conclusion

An often-overlooked cause of tinnitus is spinal misalignment. Chiropractic care for tinnitus focuses on realigning the upper cervical spine to stop tinnitus. Consider chiropractic treatment for tinnitus if you suffer from ringing in your ears.

History of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is not a new fad. I has roots than run deep.

Have you ever wondered about the history of Chiropractic? How did it begin? Who started it all? The roots of chiropractic care can be traced back to as early as 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. in writings found in China and Greece. The writings mention spinal manipulation and moving the lower extremities in an attempt to alleviate low back pain.

Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of a chiropractic-like philosophy and treatment. He is quoted in his writings as saying, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases”.

In 1895, D.D. Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer was well read in anatomy and medical journals and was known as a magnetic healer.

He had this idea about chiropractic, where your health could be improved by allowing the spinal nerves to work as they were designed.

His first “patient” was Harvey Lillard. Harvey had been born able to hear, but had heard a pop in his neck some time prior and had lost his ability to hear. D.D. Palmer performed the first “adjustment” which was specifically designed to correct a spinal misalignment he had located on Harvey. Following that adjustment, Harvey was able to hear again! They initially thought they had found the cure for deafness until no other deaf patient had their hearing restored.

However, they did notice other improvements in patients and began to study their phenomenon. They began a clinic, in which patients were evaluated by medical doctors and then adjusted by chiropractors. In 1897, D.D. Palmer founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic. At that time, you could become a chiropractor in just a few months and only slightly more in cost than becoming a chiropractic patient.

Later, his son, B.J. Palmer really developed and is largely responsible for Chiropractic becoming as prominent as it is today. Throughout the history of Chiropractic, it has been the patients and their restored health that has kept it alive.

Chiropractors were initially thrown in jail for practicing medicine without a license until Chiropractic became its own health profession with a licensing board. Now, Chiropractic is licensed and recognized in every State and in countries around the world.

It has gone from being “alternative medicine” to much more mainstream and people commonly visit chiropractors or at least consider chiropractic care as a viable option for their condition.

Chiropractic Care Takes Time

Despite what some think, chiropractic care is not magic and doesn’t cure your body from one chiropractic adjustment. Instead, chiropractic care helps adjust your body, so it can start healing itself as it was intended to do. When you feel pain, your body is telling you that something is wrong. If you are patient and regularly attend your chiropractic sessions, you will most likely start to notice significant improvements to your health and wellness. The saying “All good things take time” is a great way to look at chiropractic care.

Carrot fries

Love French fries but not the carbs? Try these carrot fries for a savory change. Could be done in air fryer too.

Ingredients:

2 lbs carrots (medium to large)
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
1 tsp dried dill
1 tsp dried parsley
1 tsp coarse salt (plus more for sprinkling)
2 Tbsp tapioca flour
2 Tbsp olive oil
Finely chopped fresh parsley, for serving (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425℉.

Peel the carrots then cut lengthwise into thin fries.  Thinner fries will turn out crispier than larger fries, you’ll likely have some variation.

Place the carrot fries in a large bowl and set aside.

In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, onion powder, dill, parsley, salt and tapioca flour.

Drizzle the carrots with olive oil, then add the spice mixture.  Toss to combine.

Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.  Spread the fries on the paper, spreading them out, not touching each other, in a single layer.

Bake 12 minutes on one side, then flip the fries and bake 12 to 17 minutes more until the fries are dry and slightly browned or until desired doneness.

Let cool slightly, then serve immediately.

These carrot fries are best right out of the oven; they become softer as they sit.

Chiropractic for babies: Mother approved

Did you know that Chiropractic care has been used for babies as young as a few days old? It can help with sleep, feeding, constipation and fussiness.

Babies can't tell us how important chiropractic is for their health and wellness, so let's listen to what their mothers are saying. A survey of mothers whose infants received chiropractic care reveals high levels of satisfaction relative to improvements in infant behavioral issues such as feeding problems, excessive crying, sleep issues, problems with supine sleep position (on the back; the recommended position to minimize SIDS risk), time performing prone positioning (on stomach; an important position for developing early motor skills ) and restricted cervical (neck) range of motion. Overall, mothers were overwhelmingly satisfied with the impact chiropractic care had on their infants.”

What does your spinal cord do?

Do you ever wonder just exactly what your spinal cord does and what it is attached to? This is why a chiropractor is so important.

What does the spinal cord do?

The brain and spinal cord are your body’s central nervous system. The brain is the command center for your body, and the spinal cord is the pathway for messages sent by the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.

The peripheral nervous system is the network of nerves strands that branch off from the left and right sides of the spinal cord through openings between each vertebra on the spinal canal. These nerve pairs spread throughout your body to deliver commands from your brain and spinal cord to and from parts of your body. Diagram.

The central nervous system and peripheral nervous system work together to allow your brain to control your body’s many functions, which includes 3 important areas (Diagram):

  1. Motor Functions - directs your body’s voluntary muscle movements.

  2. Sensory Functions – monitors sensation of touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

  3. Autonomic Functions – regulates digestion, urination, body temperature, heart rate, and dilation/contraction of blood vessels (blood pressure).

Why a Chiropractic visit is worth your time and money

Some people are skeptical of chiropractors but here are some great reasons why a visit to a chiropractor is worth your time and money.

By Genevieve Cunningham

Few people question the value of a doctor. They know that getting care might be expensive, but they also know that their knowledge and experience is well worth it. Unfortunately, many people aren’t quite as sure about the help of a chiropractor. They ask themselves questions such as: Is it even worth it? Will it really work? Should I even waste my time? If you’re on the fence about hitting up your local chiropractic clinic, check out these reasons why getting care is absolutely worth your time and money.

Chiropractic Care is a Treatment for Multiple Ailments

Many people believe that chiropractors treat the back and that’s pretty much it. But the truth is that chiropractors can treat a whole host of unwanted and frustrating ailments. Though their treatments will always focus on the health of the spine, the effects of this can be felt all over the body. People who enjoy care suffer from ailments such as back and neck discomfort, recurrent headaches, a weak immune system, joint stiffness, and a whole host of others. And the chiropractor has been known to help in all of these situations, leaving a huge number of very happy and satisfied patients.

Chiropractic Care is an Excellent Prevention Measure

Along with treating multiple ailments, chiropractors are also helpful for prevention. If you get to the clinic on a regular basis, the chiropractor will work to keep your spine in its proper alignment. This means that the ailments mentioned above (or many others!) may not only disappear, but they may also stay away because the spine stays in a healthier state. Even people who find their ailments long gone often continue care to keep them away and stay as healthy as possible.

Chiropractic Care is Affordable … If You Know Where to Go

NFL embracing chiropractic care

If chiropractic care is good enough for the NFL, it is even better for the reset of us. Call and make an appointment now with Dr. Becky Grimm at 217-222-4363

After exploring a variety of options, many players in the National Football League (NFL) have discovered that chiropractic might just be the way to a faster recovery from injuries, and ultimately, a longer career. In the Dec. 10 issue of the USA Today, a story outlines how players have been seeking more “non-pharmaceutical” options to speed their recovery and get them back on the field. As a result, many players have turned to chiropractic, acupuncture and other alternative sources to resolve their injuries. Many NFL teams have now taken the next step in player preservation, and have hired a team chiropractor to assist with treatment.

Avoid surgery with chiropractic care

Avoid back surgery with chiropractic care. Surgery isn’t always the best option. Try the pain relief that a chiropractor can give you first.

“Low back pain is common, but how it's treated varies considerably. Unfortunately, too many people skip chiropractic when they could be enjoying the proven benefits – and avoiding the risks associated with pain medication; or even worse, back surgery.

The authors of a new study hypothesized that adult patients with newly diagnosed lumbar disc herniation or lumbosacral radiculopathy (both of which are common causes of low back pain) who received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy would be less likely to ultimately undergo lumbar discectomy (a surgical procedure) compared to similarly diagnosed adults receiving non-chiropractic care.

Patients receiving CSMT were significantly less likely to undergo discectomy at both one- and two-year follow-up compared with patients receiving other care.”
